It is never easy to beat a Grandmaster who wants to make a draw with White, even if you are an ex World Champion. Clearly, in case of a match of 4 games the outcome would be easy to guess, but in a single game at 10 in the morning anything might happen!

In this special weekly column we will be looking at the most unexpected upsets that happened last week. Players usually face opponents of a similar level. Considerably less frequent are situations when a significantly lower-rated player succeeds in beating a much stronger adversary.

Here I am , in Yerevan- at the European Individual Chess Championship- the tournament that opens this year's chess season for me.

I like playing the Men's Europeans, as it is the strongest tournament I play every year and there is absolutely no pressure on me, though it doesn't mean that I don't put some by myself

I've missed chess, as I haven't played for two and a half months and the trip to Yerevan has been a very awaited one. It is my first time in Armenia and I like it- everything has been great so far- the food, the hotel, the receipt. I hope that it will continue this way

The first round starts March 3 at 3 pm local time. Here is the official site, where you can find all the information about the tournament, as well as the live games and photo reports. I expect to have a very strong opponentin Round 1 , as I am nr.167 out of 259.

I hope to play some good games and to show my best chess!

Tuesday, 04 March 2014

After almost 5 years of tweeting, over 100k followers and 86 episodes of "Chess week on Twitter" Natalia Pogonina has finally been verified on Twitter!

How does one get verified? According to Twitter:

Twitter verifies accounts on an ongoing basis to make it easier for users to find who they're looking for. We concentrate on highly sought users in music, acting, fashion, government, politics, religion, journalism, media, sports, business, and other key interest areas.

Hence, we are grateful to you for your support and to Twitter for acknowledging Natalia's achievements and efforts to promote chess internationally. Becoming verified is an important step towards increasing the efficiency of the process.

As far as we know, at the moment only three professional chess players have verified Twitter accounts - Alexandra Kosteniuk, Garry Kasparov and Natalia Pogonina. However, we have previously compiled a list of grandmasters on Twitter - check it out. We will also update it today and add a couple of new entries! Let's hope that some of them will get the blue badges in the future.

If you follow Natalia Pogonina and send her a tweet saying that you are a chess fan from Pogonina.com, she will follow you back! Let's stay in touch

As I've suggested on this thread many times it's more or less impossible to make a decent living as a chess player, unless you are rated in the top twenty in the world.

Demis Hassapis is a former chess prodigy who recently sold his company to Google for £400 million. Demonstrating that if you have the brainpower to be good at chess, you are far better off putting that intelligence to use in some other activity where you might actually get rewarded. Then in fairness, even most strong chess players aren't as bright as Demis.

If the parent's of some promising young chess player came to me for advice on how whether or not their kid should become a chess player, I'd strongly advise against it. Far better to be an amateur, than suffer the trial's and tribulations of being a chess pro without any real money to show for it.

In recent years we've seen even very strong Grandmasters give up playing chess for a living, to pursue another vocation with a more secure financial grounding.

Ivanisevic is a strong attacking player. He wins many nice games, especially with the White pieces, thanks to his sharp and dangerous openings.
