David vs. Goliath: Upsets of the Week

In this special weekly column we will be looking at the most unexpected upsets that happened last week. Players usually face opponents of a similar level. Considerably less frequent are situations when a significantly lower-rated player succeeds in beating a much stronger adversary.

The World Blitz Chess Championship has produced quite a few upsets, including Kryvoruchko (2707) - Omar (2366), 0-1. However, only 8 out of the 23 featured games were played there. Other David vs. Goliath encounters took place at tournaments with a standard time control.

GM Caruana - GM Karjakin annotated by GM Naiditsch

We are in the last round and Karjakin is the tournament leader with 5/8, followed by Carlsen and Caruana with 4.5/8. In the current game, Caruana maybe got some little advantage out of opening and tried his best to push Black's position to the limit. It seems like White has maybe pushed too hard and suddenly Black got excellent winning chances, which Karjakin converted in a perfect manner. Actually we have to admit that it seems like Karjakin is going to be very soon the contender for the WCC match against Carlsen. Sergey has improved a lot during the last 2 years, he has a huge preparation and just amazing physical shape.

The change never comes easy.

If one wants to become a different man, he should rip the old him into pieces and throw them to garbage. You can't become a new man saving in the same time the old you.

We are all like phoenixes, each of us is capable of rising from our own ashes. The point is that no one burns himself, usually someone does it for us and though we see this someone as the biggest enemy, "someone" makes us the most precious gift one can receive- the chance to reinvent ourselves.

We are in the final round of the Russian Higher league. The tournament, where the first 5 players qualify to the Russian Superfinal, where they join to Kramnik, Grischuk, Karjakin and the other top players. The winner of this game had a guaranteed place there, but draw were not enough for them. My good friend Vadim Zvjaginsev manages to win a brilliant tactical game. The game is full of unusual, but beautiful tactical motifs.
