Another interesting conclusion that jumps to the mind is that FIDE and club players seem not to get along well. While at 2800-2000 level the numbers keep growing as we go down the pyramid (it is predictable that the higher the level, the fewer the players), below 2000 we see a sudden monotonous decline! Of course, one of the explanations for this phenomenon may be that FIDE has established the lower entry barriers relatively recently, so some people just didn't have a chance to get a rating . However, it is clear that this reason is by far not the main one. More likely is that FIDE is simply not efficient enough in holding rated events for amateurs and motivating them to participate.

Of course FIDE is being elitist - and I like it that way, thank you very much. Everyone and their dog has a national rating - I want my FIDE rating to mean something!

Konstantin, you are making a very strange point. Ratings mean something when they can be compared. Otherwise let's imagine a situation: - I've got a rating of X FIDE (your statement) - What is FIDE and how much is that? (someone asks in return)
This way you won't have a chance to show off your skills. Well, of course, there are some people who will give you credit for having ANY FIDE rating, but then what's the difference between you and a 1200? He also has a rating...

here you are spot-on, rated events are unhead of in Africa. young up coming players yearn to have ratings, but the events are not anywhere in there vicinity. The only chance is the olympiad which is so competitive and not many qualify. The continental event admits few players, so what else, many give up chess after not knowing how well they [play the nobal game.
whether it is FIDE or local federations, surely, something is wrong somewhere

What about Kramnik?
Did you put only the current Elo right? Because Kramnik was +2800 too.
It is interesting this table, but i think that the "average" is at 2000-2099 Elo because the country's organization.For example, Im mexican and here almost no ranked tournaments and if there are, are only in the capital or important cities and the people have to travel and spends lot of money in food, hotel, tickets, registration...sooooo, being a GM is expensive(money, not consider the effort). And if i want a rating, i must to have an initial +2200, because if my initial is 1600, 1800, believe me, go up is veeeeery difficult. I think that in other countries is better and of course not better jeje Consider, also, that so many of these tournaments are in working days, and the "normal" people wont adventure and lose their permanent jobs. Ok, i only said my opinion and of course this is not your fault Natalia, I'm not complaining about you jeje dont angry, eh, please. >_
