The final round of Grenke Classic has been dramatic enough: Naiditsch had a promising position against Aronian; Carlsen was winning against Bacrot and Caruana could have scored against Baramidze. However, all the three encounters ended peacefully, thus leading to a playoff between the German #1 Arkadij Naiditsch and the World Chess Champion in classical, rapid and blitz chess Magnus Carlsen.

The tie-breaks turned out to be a thriller: Carlsen and Naiditsch traded blows in rapid chess and drew both blitz games. Only in Armageddon Carlsen (White) managed to defeat Naiditsch (Black). Still, Arkadij won their classical chess duel at Grenke, so such a result overall is a fantastic achievement for him.
