Image from the official site In game 5 Magnus opened up with 1.c4 for the first time in the match. Out of the opening he didn't get much: only a slightly better pawn structure and somewhat more active pieces. However, Black's position looked safe enough. Anand has successfully reached time control without taking any unjustified risks. Nevertheless, the Challenger is known for being able to convert innocent-looking drawish positions against the very best GMs in the world. With 45...Rc1? and a few other inaccurate decisions the World Chess Champion lost a pawn and found himself struggling for survival. By move 58 it was over: Carlsen's "a" and "h" pawn duo became unstoppable. View the game Garry Kasparov commented on Twitter: "A strange match but oddly balanced. Carlsen plays without openings and Anand without endgames! Statistically, that's in Carlsen's favor".
