In this special weekly column we are looking at the most unexpected upsets that happened last week. Players usually face opponents of a similar level. Considerably less frequent are situations when a significantly lower-rated player succeeds in beating a much stronger adversary.

22 games total, including a sensational upset: super GM Evgeny Alekseev lost in blitz to an unrated player Nikolay Vakhnin!

Alekseev (2710) - Vakhnin (unrated), 0-1
Foisor (2391) - Olea (1888), 0-1, 503 points
Zervos (1818) - Haliamanis (2309), 1-0, 491 points
Nowak (1994) - Weichold (2420), 1-0, 426 points
Lazaridis Elmaloglou (1884) - Grigoriadis (2296), 1-0, 412 points
Vyalykh (1798) - Onischuk (2175), 1-0, 377 points
Perez de Aranda (2105) - Oms Pallisse (2475), 1-0, 370 points
Gomez Jurado (2316) - Ortin Caballe (1955), 0-1, 361 points
Salagran Ferragut (1995) - Espinoza Palomino (2355), 1-0, 360 points
Khamidov (2068) - Weichold (2420), 1-0, 352 points

Average gap: 406; White won 7 games, Black won 3 games

Decades ago, but still...Hamilton 2245 vs N Martinez (maybe 1550), 0-1. Game of my life!?!?

ah, ok, Nikolay Vakhnin is unrated in classic games, but Alekseev-Vakhnin 0-1 was a blitz, and Nikolay is rated 2366, official.

About 1.5 years ago I was rated in the mid 1200's and beat a player rated over 1800. These were USCF ratings, not FIDE and of course not as high as the examples given. However the point spread was larger than all the examples except the unrated vs. SGM.

FIDE profile says Nikolay is almost 2400 ELO :)

@Marian Check his profile again. He DOES NOT have a classical FIDE rating. You are referring to the blitz rating he has earned in August.
