Before the match the Russian Champion Natalia Pogonina had an equal score against ex-World Women's Chess Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk (+1 =1 -1). At WWCC'12 Natalia dominated in both games and scored a nice win with White in game 2, thus proceeding to Round 3
Overall, day 2 of Round 2 was full of surprises and shocking upsets. Koneru Humpy, the highest-rated player of the tournament, lost the second game in a row and was eliminated by Natalia Zhukova. Now all her hopes are on Hou Yifan (if the Chinese player wins the WWCC, then Koneru will challenge her for the title in 2013). However, the reigning champion lost with White to Monika Socko. Everything will be decided on the tie-breaks. Valentina Gunina, the European Women's Chess Champion, lost a critical game to her experienced and renowned compatriot Alisa Galliamova. Two more of the main favorites got eliminated - Kateryna Lahno lost as White to Lela Javakhisvili, and Viktoria Cmilyte was defeated by Huang Qian. There were a few more amazing results and comebacks today. In fact, it's hard to think of more surprises than happened in Round 2 Game 2:
As can be seen from the table, 10 players have qualified for Round 3 already, while 6 more pairs will be playing tie-breaks tomorrow.
