Anton Korobov Wins Ukrainian Chess Championship

Anton Korobov, Champion of Ukraine-2012

Date: July 26 - August 8
Venue: Ukraine, Kiev
Format: Round robin, 12 players
Prize fund: unknown, the Regulations mention only medals

Ukraine is rated #2 on the FIDE list of top chess countries with an average rating of top-10 players = 2700. The reigning Olympic champions are a major force to reckon with, hence it is quite interesting to follow their national championship.

Out of the country's leading players only Vassily Ivanchuk (2769, #1) and Yuriy Krivoruchko (2686, #8) didn't participate. While the average chess fan might have expected one of the heavy-weights to win (Ponomariov, Volokitin, Moiseenko, Eljanov), the outcome was different. Anton Korobov, a brilliant young attacking player prevailed in the championship and won his second title (the first victory came in 2002). He is one of those players who don't get enough media coverage due to staying somewhat in the shade of their higher-rated compatriots. Meanwhile, Anton is a very strong grandmaster who, among other achievements, won silver at Aeroflot Open (A) twice in his career. That says a lot already. Congratulations!

Final standings:
1. Anton Korobov (2683) - 8/11
2-3. Alexandr Areschenko (2691), Andrei Volokitin (2704) - 7
4. Ruslan Ponomariov (2726) - 6
5-7. Alexandr Moiseenko (2706), Zakhar Efimenko (2694), Sergey Fedorchuk (2630) - 5.5
8. Pavel Eljanov (2693) - 5
9-10. Yuri Vovk (2584), Evgeny Miroshnichenko (2632) - 4.5
11. Yuri Kuzubov (2629) - 3.5
12. Alexandr Zubov (2621) - 3
