Victor Korchnoi, a living chess legend and probably the strongest vice-champion ever, is playing actively and successfully at the age of 78. However, this remarkable grandmaster is known not only for his chess masterpieces. His eccentric behaviour and poisonous insults towards his opponents have become famous not only among his colleagues. Victor is a fierce fighter, and one of the most bitter chess critics ever. Let's enjoy some of his greatest escapades:
No Chess Grandmaster is normal; they only differ in the extent of their madness
Viktor Korchnoi
Korchnoi vs. Sofia Polgar.
Punch line: "It is the very first and very last game in your life you won against me"
(Press "Read more" to see other entertaining videos)
Korchnoi - Javakhishvili
Punch line: "You were winning at a certain point...but to see that you should know how to play chess! How talentless, how talentless!"
Korchnoi vs. Muzychuk A.
Punch line: "I lost on time? Fantaaastic achievement! No, I do not sign"
Korchnoi vs. Humpy. The classical Death Stare of Victor Korchnoi
Korchnoi - Lovely the Cow. Typical mimics and behavior by Korchnoi
Bonus: at one team event Korchnoi was playing against a young grandmaster. The guy sacrificed a rook, but failed to find the winning continuation, so the game ended in a draw. Many spectators have been watching, and in solemn silence came Korchnoi's proprietary remark: "You are the DUMBEST chess player I have ever seen!". The GM had to swallow his pride, become red like Santa, and walk away in a shock (btw, that's the typical behavior of Korchnoi's victims). A fellow well-known grandmaster came up to him and tried to reassure him: "It's all right, never mind".
Guess what happened during the next round?! This time Korchnoi was to play the young GM's savior. The game ended somehow (usually it doesn't matter), and Korchnoi has spat out something along the lines of "you haven't got a clue how to play chess!". A crowd has already gathered around the table, everyone was prepared to see a show. Korchnoi's opponent reacted instantly and with a smile: "Victor Lvovich, could you please...F... OFF!" Victor the Insulter was quite shocked, while everyone in the hall applauded and cheered!

What a miserable old sod! He's got a streak of malice running through him Old Vic, hasn't he? And i don't mean that rather endearing trait of cantankerous old men who are too old to give a sh**; no, i mean a REAL dark, nasty streak. You cn tell by his demeanour. Watching the vids where he's readying to leave having played those two young women, you get the strong impression that he's misogynistically savouring their humiliation with his biting put-downs. ('')That's not on! We often overlook bad behaviour by geniuses or great talents that we wouldn't dream of letting others get away with. We put it down to eccentricity. (Notice how crazy rich people are "eccentric", while crazy poor people are "insane". Same goes for those with a wealth of intellectual acumen i guess). The GM who told him to F off behaved quite properly; might give him pause to hesitate before making an acid remark in the future to some other young master (of either gender). He's lucky some feisty WGM hasn't slapped him!

A great read! Thank you, maihsnp!I have been following (let me use Polish spelling) Korcznoj for 50 years and he is such a fascinating personality. A touch of genius mixed with a lot of human frailty. I guess I would not like him at all in person, but I greatly admire him.
