AVS gets bronze at Russian Club Cup-2010

After a dramatic last round (SpbChess won against Giprorechtrans to clinch the gold medal, ShSM lost to Chigorin Club) AVS ended up with a bronze medal. Nothing exceptional for the clear rating favorites, but a success given the absolutely terrible start.



Natalia Pogonina scored +4 -1 =1 with a 2567 performance. 1st place on her board and 3rd place in the absolute standings. Here is the full table:

AVS has a rest day in the final round, so today in the evening we will find out what place the team will take.

Once again, two challenges: 1) guess the name of my opponent (tip: he became widely known in the West after the Aeroflot scandal last year) 2) guess who the players on the next board to us are (they are also grandmasters)

The game ended in a draw after White played Ke4. But can one be sure it is the real evaluation of the position?

Tip: if you don't manage to work it out theoretically, try to play the position for both sides against a skilled player or a chess engine. It will definitely enhance your understanding of bishop endings.

Choosing the best way to victory

While in most chess puzzles there is only one solution, in regular games you often have to choose between a few promising continuations. This position is from round 3 of the Russian Club Cup. I could have won by sacrificing a rook:
35.Rd8! Bd8 36.Rd8 Rc1 37.Kg2 and Black has to give up a queen to avoid mate - Qd8 38.Nd8 Rd8 39.f6 Rg8 40.fg Rg7 41.Qe8 Rg8 42.Qe5 and White is winning. However, why calculate all this and risk blundering something, if it is possible to win much easier?

Can you see what move I played instead of 35.Rd8?

Something weird is going on: AVS, the rating favorite (with an average FIDE of over 2500) can't win a single match! Today they lost to Giprorechtrans 1.5-2.5 with the only win scored by Natalia Pogonina vs IM Elena Zaiats.
