It's always nice to receive presents that require creative skill: drawings, poems, songs. Recently an eminent chess composer Ivan Bryukhanov has informed me that he has dedicated a chess problem to me. But it will be kept a secret for now until the publication. On another event Pavel Evseev, a modest person who doesn't like to talk much about himself, but a quite gifted author, has sent me a fiction story about myself. It's fun, enjoyable and timely.
Tricolor (that's what Russians call their flag, since it has three stripes - white, blue and red - Pogonina.com)
. They were totally worn out. 500 advertisement banners, stands and other locations. And only two of them. Anton and Vasya started off from Kirov Street. Alla Pugacheva, Mylene Farmer, Janet Jackson. All of them have to be covered until evening by a modest poster saying "Bagira (Pogonina's nick at one of the chess servers - Pogonina.com), come back victorious!" Young guys kept approaching them, offering 100 roubles (a popular Russian banknote worth about $3.20 - Pogonina.com), and asking for the poster with the smile, THAT smile with Big Ben on the background. Vasya almost felt like selling them for twice the price with his autograph. But that would have been shameful...

Now, when August is coming to an end, it's nice to take a look at the cheerful summer photos. Today I'd like to share with you impressions from the European Team Chess Championship-2007 which took place in Turkey. The conditions (5-star hotel & a beach nearby) have attracted chess tourists from all over the world, among them an amazing number of top players: Anand, Shirov, Jakovenko, Ivanchuk, Morozevich, Eljanov, Kamsky, Mamedyarov, etc. The female part was also impressive: Humpy, Chiburdanidze, Zhukova, Hou Yifan, Pogonina, Muzychuk A., etc.

Many readers have noted that the website would have benefited from more personal posts, not only the classical reports, articles, puzzles, etc. Thats why we decided to continue the 24/7 with Natalia Pogonina series. This episode isnt related to one subject (unlike the others), its just an informal summary of whats going on:

Do you enjoy playing the Sicilian Dragon as much as Natalia Pogonina does? She has played over 100 classical games in this variation, not to mention myriads of blitz and training games. This opening usually leads to a an exciting struggle, with Black relying on the queenside attack, while White initiates an assault on the kingside. As Bobby Fischer, a famous Dragon Slayer put it, "h4-h5 and White mates". Ask Kasparov what he thinks about that statement - his victory in the 1995 WC match against Anand is mostly due to brilliant wins in the Dragon. Moreover, some current top players (Carlsen, Radjabov, Gashimov) are still not convinced.
Natalia has also experienced moments of joy & grief in the opening: important wins, interesting draws, painful defeats. Today she would like to hold a contest dedicated to those of you who love playing the Dragon.

Summer is the season of numerous strong open tournaments, but not only. Usually in July-August the North Urals Cup women chess super tournament used to take place. It always attracted intense attention of chess fans. Unfortunately, this year Krasnoturinsk is not holding the event (I hope the tradition will resume next year).
However, a new great event has been introduced The Baltic Queen. We would like to compensate for the insufficient coverage of the tournament, and familiarize you with it.
Yet another article about our upcoming book Chess Kama Sutra, really insightful and interesting. Carl Jacobs from The Trinidad Guardian shares his views on the subject of our book, women in chess and other exciting issues.

It would be interesting to hear what WGM Natalia Pogonina, one of the strongest women chess players in the world, has to say on the controversial topic of why men are apparently better at the game than women. For the Caribbeans people, her views on this perennially debated issue must hold some fascination since the mentally taxing sport has been a male dominated activity from its beginnings in the region. And some misogynistic individuals, like the late World Champion Bobby Fischer, have cited the game as evidence to prove their case that women are a mentally inferior breed to men.

Evgeny Tomashevsky, international grandmaster, FIDE rating (July, 2009) 2689, one of the most talented young Russian chess players. European Chess Champion (2009), bronze prize winner at Russian Superfinal-2007, silver medal at Aeroflot Open-2007.
By a happy coincidence both I and Evgeny live in Saratov (in fact, for me hes literally the guy next block), a city not far from Moscow with a population of about 1 mln. people and many grandmasters- in Russia only Moscow and St. Petersburg have more. I decided to ask my friend, who is a reigning European Chess Champion, for an interview. He was kind enough to agree and answer all of my questions, even the rather informal ones.

In the 8th round of the prestigeious Biel event we have witnessed an exceptionally exciting game between the two tournament leaders - Alexander Morozevich and Maxim Vachier-Lagrave. The middlegame has been rich with complications and beautiful tactics, while the endgame has been remarkably interesting. Black, being a rook up (!), still had to demonstrate a lot of skill and talent to overcome the difficulties that they have been facing.

Tryfon Gavriel, a gentleman from England (rated 2138 FIDE) & my friend at Twitter (his nick is @kingscrusher) was so kind as to annotate one of my blitz games played during the final tie-break at the Women European Chess Championship-2009. The tie-breaks have been rigorous and extremely tiresome (we have been playing all day long), so the quality of the game is not that high. That's why it's understandable that Tryfon decided not to dwell too much on computer evaluations, but rather provide a general overview from the "human" point of view.
A victory in the match earned me the bronze medal; 6,000 in prize money & satisfaction from finishing the event relatively successfully.
