Alexander Morozevich (2751) - Maxim Vachier-Lagrave (2703)

In the 8th round of the prestigeious Biel event we have witnessed an exceptionally exciting game between the two tournament leaders - Alexander Morozevich and Maxim Vachier-Lagrave. The middlegame has been rich with complications and beautiful tactics, while the endgame has been remarkably interesting. Black, being a rook up (!), still had to demonstrate a lot of skill and talent to overcome the difficulties that they have been facing.

Hope you will enjoy my commentary:

Morozevich (2751) - Vachier-Lagrave (2703)

Many thanks for the analysis, Natalia!

I was under [obviously wrong] impression during the game that if White king had made to the king\'s flank, it would have been a draw.

How do you think, what move is harder to find \'over the board\'? 22. Be6+ or 26. Rxf8 ?

I believe Be6+ is harder, but any chess engine finds 22. Be6+, so this move should be found before the game during the preparation... And the same prep should suggest 17..e4!, but we\'re not afraid of it, aren\'t we? :-) So 17..Kf7 should be too bad to be found -- Maxime got Alexander \'out of variation\', or something else. There was no spectacular defense by Black in the moves 17-19.

Little conspiracy theory... Now it puzzles me most :-)

Thanks again and best wishes :-)

P.S. I believe you know, Flash plugin used to show the game has White castling twice :-) It mistook 21. Kc1 from 17..e4 variation for 21. 0-0-0 :-)

Hi Natalia,

very good commentary of Moro-MVL game. But, barely no exclamation mark for MVL, only for Moro (who lost by the way), and, i like your "easy quick win" comment, easy?? maybe for Rybka, but over the board in time trouble in a very sharp tactical position i dont think it was easy for Moro to find those moves...

keep going

"Easy" and "hard" are relative adjectives. For a 2750+ it's supposed to be very easy, since such tactics can be found in books for Expert-level players. :)

expert
enjoyed the bishop move on the 22nd, but the 23rd also looks like it could be improved.
