Natalia Pogonina at WIECC-2004 Continuing the "Lucky 7" series of my stories about the Women European Chess Championships (see Episode 1 about year 2003 in case you have missed it), I would like to share with you my memories from the 2004 tournament. Dresden was the host city that day. Men's and women's events have been separated again. The competition was as tough as usual, while the atmosphere away from the board was very comfortable, like at home. There were 12 rounds. After successfully qualifying for the World Championship in 2003, this time my goal was to compete for the highest places in tha rankings. The start has been good enough: I managed to win three games in a row, but then matters got worse, and I ended up with the same 6.5 points as in 2003, but this time out of 12, not 11. One of the reasons for that could be the absense of my chess coach who couldn't come to the tournament with me.
Pogonina Natalia (2382) - Peptan Corina (2439) This event hasn't been successful for me, but the negative feelings from not achieving the desired result are compensated by memories such as walking around the beautiful city, funny attempts to look after the naughty daughter of WGM Inna Gaponenko, and visiting the sweets shop that served as an excellent mood-booster.
