We would like to congratulate one of the greatest chess players ever - Vladimir Kramnik - with his 35th birthday and wish him all the best in chess and life in general!
We have been publishing a few chess tactics problems by Kramnik, here is another one:
Kramnik-Ivanchuk, 2002
White to move
It looks like White is in trouble here, but the World Champion had everything under control. How did he proceed?

Kramnik-Ivanchuk chess tactics
Definitely it will be wrong, but I will play Nxf7, maybe black can continue with 1) ..., Rxd1; 2) Rxd1, Kxf7; 3) Qf5+, Qf6; 4) Rd7+, then trade the Queens and regain the piece.

possible continuation
Of course the knight on g6 is the key, so Nxf7 is the most natural move, with the idea Kxf7? Qf5 Qf6 Bxe6 Ke7 Rc7 winning. after Rxd1 first, Rxd1 Kxf7 qf5 just loses a pawn.
alternatively, Nxb7 Qxb7 Bxe6 would also win a pawn. Can't decide which one is better, probably Nxf7 is more tricky
My favorite Kramnik game is the one he lost to Morozevich in the g4 (Shabalov/Shirov) slav - was fun to watch.
