As you might have noticed, so far we have been reviewing top chess countries (sorted by average rating of top-10 players). Austria looks modest in this respect. However, I would like to write about this great country for a number of reasons. One of them is that a staggering 17% of Pogonina.com readers come from Austria. The other is that the average rating of Austria's top-10 is 2501, exactly the same as my FIDE rating! Congrats! The third one is that my husband's sister, Anna, lives there.

Self-entitled Grandmaster of all Grandma
That's very nice of you to mention my home-country, if I remember correctly, a man named Johann Berger from Graz (where I studied) invented the Tie break system, and, also came up with the idea to immediately determine whether a King is able to catch a pawn before it can be promoted, by drawing a square originating from the pawn in question.
Not to forget Wilhelm Steinitz! and Ernst Gruenfeld!, right?
