Round 7 was a fighting draw in the Catalan. Topalov has uncorked an amazing novelty: by offering an exchange, and then a piece, he obtained a position which was hard to play for White unprepared. At one point Anand was down an hour on time, but he managed to handle his opponent's counterplay and even obtain winning chances due to Veselin's overagressive play in the endgame. After all these collisions, the game ended in a draw that can't be called boring by even the fiercest critic.
In round 8 Veselin had Anand on the defensive again in the Slav. Anand, probably being tired after the previous game, blundered in an equal opposite-colored bishop endgame and instantly resigned. Thus, Topalov has both caught up in the match (the score is 4-4 now) and obtained some psychological and opening advantage. It's actually the first time in this match when Anand has headed for a rest day after a loss. Will he be able to come back like in game #2? Or will Veselin make another step towards winning the match? We'll see tomorrow!
