By candidate master Peter Zhdanov, Editor of Pogonina.com In this special weekly column we will be looking at the most unexpected upsets that happened last week. Players usually face opponents of a similar level. Considerably less frequent are situations when a significantly lower-rated player succeeds in beating a much stronger adversary. This week we are proud to present to you, among other upsets, quite a few of GM losses to amateurs: Top-10: Karavade (2399) - Aakanksha (1802), 0-1, 597 points Burovic (2002) - Damljanovic (2568), 1-0, 566 points Bogosavljevic (2532) - Burovic (2002), 0-1, 530 points Gregori (2042) - Narciso Dublan (2538), 1-0, 496 points Mrdja (2385) - Low (1961), 0-1, 424 points Asgarov (2192) - Kravtsiv (2587), 1-0, 395 points Mgeladze (2198) - Parligras (2581), 1-0, 382 points Xylogiannopolous (2137) - Dobrov (2515), 1-0, 378 points Agasiyev (2403) - Gokerkan (2025), 0-1, 378 points Kravtsiv (2587) - Azarya (2217), 0-1, 370 points Khalifman (2617) - Kostin (2312) didn't make it to the top-10, but one hardly ever sees the ex-FIDE World Chess Champion lose, especially with White and to lower-rated players. Average gap: 452; White won 5 games, Black won 5 games. View all the games The featured player of the week is Dario Drezzadore. Here is the message we have received from him: Hi! I am Dario and I read your blog. I won recently a David vs. Goliath game, and I saw you published the result on the site (on 29th April).
I'd like to suggest you to "push more" my game and to publish it, since my opponent had quite a strong ELO (2537).
I just wanted to be evil, really, but the game is interesting (1.g4!) and with no big mistakes. You could say it's an hypermodern opening - like a GM commented - but that's only if you feel the need to categorize everything.
If you want to add some text line to the game, you could write something tragic like:
"In a world where computers dominate chess, there's little space for human-style players. If you want to revolt against modern chess, just mind to go all the way, from the first move on"
The game was played the 26th april 2014 in Coimbra, Portugal, at the Open "Queima das Fitas"
Drezzadore, Dario (2066) - Andres Gonzales (2537), 1-0, 471 points
Hope you see my point.
Well, now I just wanted to spread some fun. Keep up the good work
Smiles,
Dario
