by GM Danny Gormally Editor's note: there were reports on Facebook regarding participation of FM Borislav Ivanov in the upcoming Politiken Cup. However, it looks like he has been removed from the list of participants. GM Daniel Gormally has earlier blogged about Borislav. What can the chess community do about this case? Here is another suggestion. Thinking about the Ivanov story a bit more, I suggest a solution. Let the guy play. In fact go further-invite him to the top events. When he starts turning over Carlsen and Aronian, and others in the top ten, let's interview him after the games. The one caveat on his participation, is that he must attend press conferences after the games, and give lengthy explanations which may explain how he was able to come up with such brilliant moves during the game.
When he fails to come up with a single decent variation or explanation for his astonishing play, why he was able to play so well, I think finally our worst fears will be realised. No further study will be required, as it is clear that he is just repeating variations from his computer, over the board.
I have heard a lot from the guy about how chess players are jealous, and how they are buttheads and so on, but I've yet to hear him offer a single story about his games, which says a lot really.
Fortunately I think chess is quite lucky with cheats- there isn't enough money in the game to attract the kind of industrial cheating on the level of a Lance Armstrong for example.
I wish I could say the same about other sports- formerly banned Justin Gatlin beat Usain Bolt the other day- and don't even get me started on Tennis. Serena Williams is posting better results at 31 and serving harder than most men, and Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal seem to have superhuman abilities to play for hours- both seem fresh as a daisy after five hours of play.
