Today's examples are taken from the games of grandmaster Erich Eliskases (1913 to 1997).  Eliskases was a very strong grandmaster , awarded the title in 1952, and is one of those players whose life was drastically affected by the Second World War.

Born in Innsbruck, he represented Germany several times. In 1939 he found himself in Buenos Aires when the war broke out in Europe.  He decided to stay and make a life for himself in Argentina.  The down side to this is that the German chess federation had had plans to sponsor a match between him and Alekhine for the world championship...not returning home to Germany ended these plans!  Eliskases remains as one of the strongest players of his generation to have appeared.

Some of the following examples are quite difficult, so GOOD LUCK!

Saemisch - Eliskases

Germany, Bad Harzburg, 1938.  White had just played 26.Bc8, trying to neutralize the Black Bishop. Black to play and win.

Muller H - Eliskases
Black to play

Vienna, 1939.  White had just played 16.b5.  Lagging in development, White has put his hopes on the Bishop pair....
How does Black build up a strong attack?

This is a beautiful game:

Muller - Eliskases, 0-1

Rossetto - Eliskases

Rio, 1952.  White had just played 23.g4, intensifying an already sharp, asymetrical struggle!
The game continued:
23...Rb4 24.ab Qb4 25.Kc1?! (25.Ka1!)

White is up a whole Rook and is also attacking the Bishop on f5! Black to play and win.

Eliskases - Rossetto
White to play

From Montevideo 1941.  At first sight Black seems OK, but Eliskases notices the essential in the position:  the Black monarch is all alone on the Kingside.

27.Be5 Bc6

White to play and win in one move!

Eliskases - Cruz, W

Mar del Plata, 1949.  Clearly White has the upper hand, but that is not the point.  You must also CRUSH Black enroute to punish him for giving you the advantage in the first place! White to play and crush Black!
