By candidate master Peter Zhdanov, editor of Pogonina.com In this special weekly column we will be looking at the most unexpected upsets that happened last week. Players usually face opponents of a comparable level. Considerably less frequent are situations when a significantly lower-rated player succeeds in beating a much stronger adversary. Last week has produced an anti-record. Normally we have 20-30 upsets with a rating difference of 300 points or more, from which the final top-10 is formed. This time we have found only 5. Top-5: Moroni (2170) - Epishin (2607), 1-0, 437 points Kolas (2227) - Berg (2574), 1-0, 347 points Bogdanic (1426) - Maderner (1772), 1-0, 346 points Aranovitch (2328) - Pinchetti (2015), 0-1, 313 points Usmanov (2367) - Motylev (2676), 1-0, 309 points Average gap: 350; White won 4 games, Black won 1 game Replay the games If you have ever won a game against someone rated 300 points or above of yourself, please send it to us for publication. Any additional information (a photo, annotations, etc.) will be appreciated.
