by Candidate Master Peter Zhdanov In this special weekly column we will be looking at the most unexpected upsets that happened last week. Players usually face opponents of a comparable level. Considerably less frequent are situations when a significantly lower-rated player succeeds in beating a much stronger adversary. This week's post includes many games from junior chess championships where many underrated players are participating. Hence, it is not surprising that our hit list looks rather impressive: Top-10 upsets: Mikes (2102) - Deary (1602), 0-1, 500 points (new record!) Mamyrbay (1590) - Abbas (2016), 1-0, 426 points Stark (1983) - Pereira (1571), 0-1, 412 points Oltian (1799) - Sofranov (2191), 1-0, 392 points Mamyrbay (1590) - Rohrer (1976), 1-0, 386 points Jarc (1698) - Badalyan (2081), 1-0, 383 points Deary (1602) - Gonzalez Olivieri (1985), 1-0, 383 points Ahmed (1935) - Gjika (1563), 0-1, 372 points Liu (1909) - Beukema (2274), 1-0, 365 points Pricopie (1630) - Kjoita (1992), 1-0, 362 points Average gap: 398 points (new record!); White won 7 games, Black won 3 games Replay the games Related reading: Episode 5 Episode 4 Episode 3 Episode 2 Episode 1
