Dmitry Andreikin, the Russian Chess Champion, is definitely on a roll. Another impressive achievement by him is winning the Internet Blitz Grand Prix co-held by the Chess Planet playing server and the Russian Chess Federation. The time control was 3m/game+1s/move. Stage I: four online Swiss qualifiers, 11 winners of each of the qualifiers (44 overall) proceed to the Final Stage II: 44 qualifiers and 4 special nominees of the Russian Chess Federation clash in a knock-out event. Four groups, only the top-2 players survive. Actually, the RCF was king enough to offer a place in the Final to Natalia, but the Russian Women's Chess Champion had to decline the offer due to a tight schedule. Stage III: The 8 superfinalists battle it out in a knock-out event. 4 games in each pair, Armageddon in the case of a tie. In the 1/4-final World Blitz Chess Champion Alexander Grischuk (RUS) defeated Farrukh Ammonatov (TAJ) by drawing an Armageddon game with Black. Sergei Volkov (RUS) succumbed to Eltaji Safarli (AZE) 0.5-3.5. Dmitry Andreikin (RUS) came on top vs. Zaven Andriasian (ARM): 2.5-1.5. Alexandr Zubov (UKR) scored 3 points vs. his compatriot Igor Kovalenko. 1/2-final: Eltaji Safarli knocked-out Alexander Grischuk: 2.5-1.5. Dmitry Andreikin vs. Alexander Zubov ended in 3-1. Final: in a dramatic fight Andreikin won the title by drawing Safarli in an Armageddon game. Black rules! Financial conditions: in case you think that the chess players have just been having fun, then you are wrong. The prize fund (distributed in the Final and Superfinal) was an impressive 1,280,000 rubles (about $40,000). The winner earned 200,000 rubles ($6,250). Congratulations to the organizers and to the participants! Official website
