FIDE announced 2011 to be the year of Mikhail Botvinnik (as it is the 100th anniversary of the legendary Patriarch of the Soviet Chess). The celebrations include a number of chess events run by the Russian Chess Federation: 1) a swiss open tournament 2) super tournament featuring male and female world top players 3) stars who knew Botvinnik personally - veterans of chess.
The unstoppable 80-year old Viktor Korchnoi, who had a +1 -1 =2 record against Botvinnik, dominated the field of renowned grandmasters and chess coaches. Mentioning the participants' titles will take ages, so let's just look at their top world rankings:
Korchnoi - #2 (first time in 1976, last time in 1981)
Portisch - #2 in 1981
Taimanov - #15 in 1971
Vasiukov - #17 in 1976
Uhlmann - #19 in 1978
Ivkov - #28 in 1971
Zaitsev - #88 in 1979
Chernikov - #134 in 1973
Bykhovsky, Nikitin - #179 in 1972
The arbiter of the event was Botvinnik's long-time second and friend GM Yuri Averbakh, the oldest GM in the world.
