Wang Yue and Ding Yixin win Chinese Chess Championships
|

China is ranked #3 on the list of top chess countries. Hence, it is not surprising that their national championships are very strong round robin events. However, some of the key players have been absent this year.
Wang Yue, an extremely solid GM rated 2700+, who used to be the leader of the Chinese team, won the event 1.5 points of the nearest competitor! A fantastic achievement, although had the Chinese #1 Wang Hao and the 2012 champion Ding Liren (who is currently playing in Alekhine Memorial) participated, the challenge would have certainly been greater for Wang Yue. The winner's losses came from relatively unknown GMs Zhao Jun and Ma Qun, the latter of whom earned the silver medal. Ex- member of the 2700+ club Li Chao finished at third place. Hou Yifan, the world's #2 female player, also took part in the open event and performed at more or less her rating level. 13-year old Wei Yi deserves a special mention: being the world's #1 player U14, he has already applied for a GM title! How does it feel to be rated 2530 at his age?
