Below you can see a rating progress chart for the top-10 youngest GMs in the history of chess, from Sergey Karjakin (earned the title at 12 years 7 months) to Etienne Bacrot (14 years 2 months). Obviously, Magnus Carlsen is dominating just about any age category. Please note that the promising players who haven't made it to the top-10 youngest GMs are not featured, while some of them have very impressive results. A notable example is Anish Giri, who was rated over 2700 at 18 years old.

Today's examples are taken from the games of grandmaster Erich Eliskases (1913 to 1997).  Eliskases was a very strong grandmaster , awarded the title in 1952, and is one of those players whose life was drastically affected by the Second World War.

Born in Innsbruck, he represented Germany several times. In 1939 he found himself in Buenos Aires when the war broke out in Europe.  He decided to stay and make a life for himself in Argentina.  The down side to this is that the German chess federation had had plans to sponsor a match between him and Alekhine for the world championship...not returning home to Germany ended these plans!  Eliskases remains as one of the strongest players of his generation to have appeared.

Some of the following examples are quite difficult, so GOOD LUCK!
