Alexander Moiseenko is the New European Chess Champion

Alexander Moiseenko won European Chess Championship-2013. In the ultimate round he lost an important game to Ian Nepomniatchi, but his half-point lead going into round 11 & a good tie-break score ensured the Ukrainian GM's overall success. Nine more players finished on par with him (8/11). Evgeny Alekseev and Evgeny Romanov (both represent Russia) took, correspondingly, silver and bronze medals.
The event was hosted by Legnica, Poland. The prize fund is rather mediocre (100,000 euro), but chances to prestigious title and/or qualify for the World Cup (23 spots), as well as strong opposition, have attracted an impressive field. As a result, 286 players took part. Among them were 143 GMs and 5 WGMs.
Notable facts:
1) Out of the 26 top finishers 9 players represent Russia and 6 Ukraine.
2) 4-time USSR Champion Alexander Beliavsky (he will turn 60 this December) finished 4th!
3) Ex-Russian Chess Champion Evgeny Alekseev had the best performance of the championship 2800.
4) Only a few women showed up. Maria Muzychuk scored 6 points out of 11 and finished in 119th place.

Khotenashvili Won Women's FIDE Grand Prix Stage in Geneva

According to Bela Khotenashvili, a victory in such a strong tournament is her best career result so far. Anna Muzychuk had a fantastic tournament too & is now rated close to 2600. Tatiana Kosintseva and Nana Dzagnidze won 4 games and lost 2, which was enough for sharing third place. Ju Wenjun and Anna Ushenina finished at 6/11. For the Chinese player this result is nothing special. The Women's World Chess Champion has once again demonstrated that her nerves are made of steel: even after having not won a B+N vs K endgame, she calmly continued playing and earned a couple of rating points. Kateryna Lagno's play was shaky: at some point she was in contention for first place, but then she lost 3 games out of 4. Hou Yifan and Alexandra Kosteniuk have been struggling most of the tournament and finished at -1 (5/11). The Grand Prix stage didn't go well for Viktoria Cmilyte, who found herself at 4.5/9. Tuvshintugs Batchimeg had a decent performance given her low rating and lack of experience: she scored 3.5/11 and defeated Hou Yifan along the way. The biggest upset of the event was Olga Girya's result: only 2/11 and a clear last place with no wins.

GM Davor Palo on Winning Danish Chess Championship

by GM Davor Palo
My name is Davor Palo. It's entirely possible that many readers here at Pogonina.com haven't heard of me, and I can only blame myself for that, if you will. At 20 years of age, I retired from chess. By then I was already a GM, so naturally this invited some questions. Even non-chess players have a hard time understanding a decision like that. I would say that it was a combination of things. A surprising number of chess players "switched" to poker in the last decade, and many did it successfully. Many of them found it difficult to excel at both at the same time, however. I didn't even bother trying to do both at the same time, but then again, it wasn't the only reason. I've always thought of chess as a nice hobby, and I can recommend it to all people. However, I'm not sure I can say the same thing about trying to make living by playing chess. It's not that I had any major setbacks in that sense, and the respect you enjoy from being a good player is a pleasure. One international master remarked that whenever he sees a player make a comeback to chess after a long break, they've always gained some weight in the meantime! I'm not any different in that respect, though this in itself is proof that playing chess means burning some serious energy!
