The traditional annual Sigeman Chess tournament took place in Malmo, Sweden. Three players emerged as winners of the prestigious 21st edition. Richard Rapport (2674) is a rising Hungarian star. The 17-year old chess prodigy is already approaching the symbolic 2700 mark. Nigel Short (2681), "the handsome British chess legend" (that's how he refers to himself at PlayChess) has another tournament victory to add to his impressive resume. Nils Grandelius (2556), a young tactical Swedish player, was not among the favorites, yet he managed to perform at the highest level of all the participants: FIDE 2716. The other five grandmasters who took part in Sigeman-2013 were Ivan Sokolov and Loek Van Wely (both from Netherlands), as well as Hans Tikkanen, Berg Emanuel and Jonny Hector (all from Sweden).

In this special weekly column we will be looking at the most unexpected upsets that happened last week. Players usually face opponents of a similar level. Considerably less frequent are situations when a significantly lower-rated player succeeds in beating a much stronger adversary.

White went for a thematic continuation here. Black, a well-known theoretician, didn't see it coming. What is the idea?

Eva Moser, the rating favorite of the WGM-norm round robin, won the event in style with a fantastic score of 8/9 and a nice performance of 2558. The other contenders were left far behind (6 points or less). No WGM norms have been earned, because a 2400+ performance is required.
