I went down the gym earlier today to try and burn off some calories, picked up during all the drinking and eating I did during the Scottish champs.

The gym lights are extremely harsh and I was somewhat disgusted by the sight of this huge gut staring back at me and these unmistakable moobs. Admittedly I've lost quite a lot of weight since last year's nadir, where I was touching 16 stones, but at 14 and a half I'm still about 2 stones heavier than I'd like to be. Ironically I do a lot more exercise than I did when I was in my early twenties, but a slower metabolism rate means I'm nearly five stones heavier than I was then.

Does the "Draw with Black, Win with White" Approach Work Anymore?

Modern chess differs in many ways from how chess was played just a generation or two ago. The main reason is obviously the influence of computers. Powerful analysis engines allow players to delve much deeper into positions in preparation than in times past. This potentially has serious implications for how to approach the game.

Black to move

The task is to find at least two different winning lines for Black. In the game Darja tried to simplify the position and play for a draw, which has predictably led to a loss.

The results of Round 1 can hardly be called sensational, although a few upsets have still occurred. Abdulla Khalaya (2241) drew Anna Muzychuk (2594), while Lanita Stetsko earned 0.5 points against Mariya Muzychuk (2484).

On Day 2 all the three games were very exciting and fighting. Nepomniatchi employed a very rare move (5.h4) in the Gruenfeld against Vachier-Lagrave. The experiment looked successful at first sight, but then Ian lost control over the position and Maxime managed to grind him down in an endgame with an extra pawn. A double-edged King's Indian struggle between Bacrot and Ding Liren ended in the Frenchmen's favor. Richard Rapport had a commanding advantage as White in the Rossolimo, but then he decided to give away a pawn for some reason, and Alexander Moiseenko prevailed.
