GM Arkadij Naiditsch (2731) didn't rest on his laurels a single day after winning Weihnachtsopen. Instead he went to Basel and claimed the 1st place there as well.

GM Arkadij Naiditsch won the "Masters" section of the Basel chess festival. Weihnachtsopen in Zurich. The tournament was held from December January 1 to 5 and featured 80 participants.
The ultimate round turned out to be quite dramatic: GM Rapport (2716) lost a 21-move game with White against GM Pavlovic (2472). As a result, 5 players finished tied for 1st place, but Arkadij's tie-breaker turned out to be the best.

Putting all on the Winning Card - Round 9 Report

By WGM Anna Rudolf and GM Mihail Marin
The results of the ninth round brought up an unusual situation: the medalists are known already, but their order is yet to be decided by the last round.
India defeated Romania with 2,5-1,5 after a relatively "dry" match with just one decisive game. Russia beat Germany by the same score, but their first board lost while the last two brought the decisive victories. Just like in the previous round, Iran's score against Poland 1 (3,5-0,5) is typical for the start of the tournament and not for the decisive days.
Iran and India remain in shared lead with 16 points, trailed by Russia by one point. The gap between Russia and the rest of the field is of three points, preventing any other team from reaching the podium.
There is an important detail, though: Iran's second tie-break is by five (!) points better than India's. For the Irani players the last round strategy is clear: a match victory by the smallest margin would ensure the gold medals. India should also go for a win in order to avoid being caught by Russia and be ready to overtake Iran if they stumble. For different reasons, Russians should play at full strength, too: the third place is secured already and they could improve their placement if something will go wrong for the leaders.
Summing up, we can expect that the virtual medalists will put everything on one card: the victory!

A Legend Among Prodigies - Round 8 Report

By WGM Anna Rudolf and GM Mihail Marin
The eighth round started under almost perfect circumstances of equality. The three leaders had played their direct encounters already, with a puzzling result: Russia beat India, India beat Iran and, in order to close the circle, Iran beat Russia. Therefore, all leading teams faced opponents with lower number of points in the eighth round.
In the top match India crushed Ukraine with a surprising 3,5-0,5 while Iran defeated Serbia with a perfect score: 4-0!! Such results are typical for the first rounds, not for the decisive phase of the tournament...
The Russian players did not seem to completely recover from the shock of yesterday and content themselves with a 2-2 against Turkey.
India and Iran are leading with 14 points, followed by Russia with 13 and Romania with 12. The ninth round schedules the top matches India-Romania and Iran-Poland.
As reported in "The visit of the immortals", Judit Polgar attended the tournament.
