h2-h4 Revolution

In the late 1980s and early 1990s the chess world experienced a g2-g4 revolution in the opening. In a number of openings, from the Semi-Slav over the Philidor and to the English, White players pushed the g-pawn forward early on in the game, often before move 10. I wrote about this in my book How Chess Games are Won and Lost. At first sight this thrust seemed to violate the classic opening principles of development, center, and king safety, but in reality the g2-g4-g5 push often had to do with the center the Black knight on f6 is pushed away from the center.

In this position Le made an inferior move rather hastily instead of taking the time to calculate all the intricate lines. How should White proceed?

In this special weekly column we are reviewing the most unexpected upsets that happened last week. Players usually face opponents of a similar level. Considerably less frequent are situations when a significantly lower-rated player succeeds in beating a much stronger adversary.

The standard of the World Chess Cup, which is going on at the moment, is quite astonishing. Even in blitz very few mistakes are being made. Today Alexander Morozevich came through his match against Nikita Vitiugov, which could only be described as a brutal encounter.

The final blitz game was of a much higher level than you would find in most classical time  controls; Vitiugov's stubborn resistance finally cracked when he allowed a mating net in a rook and pawn ending. It is rare that you see both players "in the zone" as they call it at the same time, but that certainly was the case there.

Anyway here is my rough preview of tomorrow's last of 16 ties:

Why are Russians so Good at Chess?

Reading through the FIDE rating list (I know what you're thinking, he should get out more) is interesting reading at times (really).

For example I noticed that very few players rated below 2520 (my classical ELO rating is currently 2514) have anything like my rapid and blitz ratings of 2546 and 2571 respectively. Which I like to take as an example that I am underrated. Or that I'm just a speed chess expert?! More on this subject later.

Quite frightening can be reading through the top of the Russian rating list. Basically on my current rating I wouldn't even get in the top 100 in that country. Being over 2700 doesn't even ensure you a place in the top ten!

Why is Russia so strong? This is hardly a new development either, Bobby Fischer was complaining about "those damn Ruskies" before I was even born.
