Hou Yifan employed a rare and interesting plan in the Sicilian Najdorf with 8.Qf3 and 9.h4. Anna Ushenina has spent almost half an hour thinking how to react. On move 14 queens were traded, and rather soon it became clear that White has obtained a clear positional edge, while Black found herself in severe time trouble. However, later on Hou Yifan made a few careless waiting moves and let the advantage slip away. On move 31 a draw by three-fold repetition was claimed.

Current score: Hou Yifan - 3/4; Anna Ushenina - 1/4

Rollerblading

Grandpa Grumps had just informed the local police that several children were rollerblading in his driveway. However, by the time Police Officer Nickham turned up the children had gone and Grandpa Grumps couldn't remember their faces. So Nickham rounded up five children in the neighbourhood who had seen the culprits and listened to what they had to say about each other.

"Exactly two of us are liars," said Andy.

"The next person to speak is a liar!" piped Babs.

"Exactly two of the others lie," said Connie.

            "Eddie tells lies," claimed Danny.

"Exactly two of us tell the truth," said Eddie.

Which children can Nickham be sure to get reliable statements from?

Up to this moment the Women's World Chess Champion was down on the score, but looked clearly better prepared. However, today Ushenina suffered another nightmare as White: by move 17 her position was already close to lost. By move 24 the game was over - Black won. So far the match is very one-sided, and Hou Yifan seems to be comfortably cruising towards regaining her title.

Current score: Hou Yifan - 2.5/3; Anna Ushenina - 0.5/3

Here I am in Bucharest, on my way to the WJCC, which will take place in Kocaeli, Turkey. I expect to arrive in Kocaeli this evening (September 12), as the 1st round is already tomorrow, at 3 pm local time.

It is my last year when I am still a junior and I've already played for 3 times in these championships (2005, 2011, 2012), so I guess that I can say that I'm a "veteran" of these tournaments.

White to move

Even strong GMs can exchange blunders sometimes.

a) Find the winning line for White in the position featured on the diagram above.
b) In the game 24.Nc3? was played. Black replied with 24...e5? and quickly lost. What would you recommend instead?

An Elitist Game?

The Woman's World Championship has just started, with Hou Yifan taking on the reigning champion, Anna Ushenina.

On paper this is a bit of a mismatch, but Ushenina is underrated, as she won a big knockout to get the title. Hou Yifan won the first game with Black, after being under pressure in the opening, while the second game was a rather dull draw. It does seem likely that Yifan will regain her title, but the reality is she's some way short of the male elite.

Hou Yifan employed a novelty (18.h4) in the Sveshnikov, but it was not clear what plan she had in mind. Ushenina had a pleasant choice between starting a sharp kingside attack (21...f5) and offering White a chance to trade into a more or less equal endgame (21...Bb6). In the end the Ukrainian player went for a less risky line, so the game finished quickly and peacefully.
