Playing against Paco is always very interesting. He is a very creative player with a lot of original ideas. So for this game I was sure I would get a chaotic position on the board and it happened just as expected.

Hracek (2635) - Rezan (2456), 2013
White to move

This time we decided to modify the task to make it more challenging and entertaining.

In the position on the diagram White played Qb8+. What happens:
a) If Black goes with the king to g7?
b) If Black replies with Kh7?

The analysis (solution) is by no means exhaustive, but is still worth checking out.

In game 6 Anna Ushenina suffered yet another defeat as White. In time trouble the Ukrainian GM played 33.Bd4?, missing an intermediary move 33...c3.
Being unable to stop Hou Yifan's passed pawn, the reigning Women's World Chess Champion resigned on move 40.

The match has been extremely one-sided so far and can (theoretically speaking) end after the very next game, if Anna loses again. The main question so far is: will GM Ushenina win at least one game or not?

Current score: Hou Yifan - 4.5/6; Anna Ushenina - 1.5/6

In the most recent issue of New In Chess, Jan Timman notes an interesting observation he has made: I have noticed that young top players make a habit these days of playing weakening pawn moves for no clear reason. As examples he shows excerpts from the games Grischuk-Mamedyarov, Beijing 2013 (26g5); Kamsky-Karjakin, Beijing 2013 (10h5); and Kunin-Edouard, Helsingør 2013 (22 b5). I tend to agree with Timman; I too find these moves surprising or even doubtful. Take a look at these positions and make up your own mind (without computer analysis).

In game 5 the same Najdorf line as in game 3 occurred on the board. Hou Yifan didnt seem to have prepared any powerful ideas or novelties. As a result, in the middlegame Black has obtained more than sufficient compensation for a pawn in the form of a strong center and two bishops. However, later on Anna made some inaccuracies which have led to her rook getting stuck on f4. The Chinese GM decided to cut the knot and offered a rook exchange, activating her opponents pieces, but heading for an equal opposite-color bishop endgame. The duel ended in a draw on move 61. Interestingly, so far both competitors seem to be having more problems playing White than Black.

Current score: Hou Yifan - 3.5/5; Anna Ushenina - 1.5/5

In this special weekly column we are looking at the most unexpected upsets that happened last week. Players usually face opponents of a similar level. Considerably less frequent are situations when a significantly lower-rated player succeeds in beating a much stronger adversary.
