Capablancas My Chess Career was written in English and published shortly before the Cuban won the world title against Lasker in (1921). I read the book while in high school back in Montreal. Capablanca intended the book as a sort of manual on chess and its fundamental principles. Those were the good old days when there were no computer engines and every chess player had to rely on his own brain to do his own thinkingthose were the days when a bit of sound advice could go a long way.

September 19

Seven rounds have already passed and we have a free day tomorrow.

The tournament is very tough- as I expected. I've got 6p/7- a nice score, though the real fight is still to come. The distance is very long- 13 rounds- anything can happen. I am happy with my games so far and I hope to keep playing decent chess.

Hou Yifan Regained Women's World Chess Champion Title

Hou Yifan,  China, 19, has become Women's World Chess Champion again!
Photo from the official website

Bookmark and Share

Hou Yifan demolished Anna Ushenina in the World Womens Chess Championship match in just 7 games instead of the scheduled 10: 4 victories, 3 draws. Poor calculation, getting into time trouble in most of the games, losing control over her nerves the Ukrainian GM was far from the merciless cold-blooded shape which she had during the last years knock-out event.

Thus, Hou Yifan became the 3rd woman in the history of the game to regain her WWCC title (after Elisabeth Bykova and Xie Jun). Congratulations! As far as we understand, she will be keeping the crown at least until next year's knock-out event.

In terms of ratings, Hou Yifan will be up to 2621 FIDE, while Anna Ushenina has been knocked out of the 2500-club. Hou Yifan will receive a prize of 114,000 for winning the event, while Anna will get 76,000 for being runner-up and 10,000 (5% of the total prize fund) for agreeing to play in China. Hence, as you can see, the women's prizes in the WC matches are still about 10 times lower than in the men's clashes.

I once taught in a primary school in London, back in the days when I used to do a lot of coaching.

There wasn't a lot of kids in this class. Maybe 6/7. One of the kids could get a bit rowdy, although he was one of the better ones in there.

When he'd get a bit out of hand, I'd say something like "if you pay attention, you can be a chess professional like me one day." Half-jokingly. He'd reply with utter conviction, "but I don't want to be a chess professional!"

Looking back, I'm starting to see he might have had a point.
