In the penultimate round, Nakamura had the sole lead with +3 and Gelfand shared the second place with Caruana, half a point behind him. We could expect an interesting fight for the first place.

As can be seen above, 9-rounds was hardly enough to get a clear winner.  Eleven GMs tied for first with  7 pts and 13 players-all GMs except for number 14, Bernadskiy (a mere IM)  had half a point less.  Eljanov won on tie-break.  Congrats to everyone involved!  This years higorin Memorial was a super strong tournament.

I continue with some tactical exercises and tidbits from this tournament:

We are in the 1st round of the Russian Championship. Quite surprisingly, Kramnik is participating too. Usually Vladimir avoids playing non Top GMs, but as he showed just a month ago by winning the World Cup, he is very good at beating weaker players.

The 7th edition of Kings Tournament took place in Bucharest, Romania from 6th to 16th October 2013.

The indefatigable Fabiano Caruana won the event two rounds in advance. His live rating is now 2792, #4 in the world.

Wang Hao once again became the Robin Hood of the tournament: he defeated the two top seeds and lost to the rating outsider.

Local player Nisipeanu Liviu-Dieter held his own in this strong field and scored 50%.

Teimour Radjabov (who has squandered 70 rating points since April 2013) is still in poor form: not a single victory and one loss. Characteristically enough, he went for a draw with perpetual check on move 19 playing White against Caruana in the final round.

Ex-FIDE World Chess Champion Ruslan Ponomariov fared even worse: 2 losses, 6 draws.

Final standings:

1. Fabiano Caruana (2779), Italy - 5
2. Wang Hao (2733), China - 4.5
3. Nisipeaunu Liviu-Dieter (2674), Romania - 4
4. Teimour Radjabov (2723), Azerbaijan - 3.5
5. Ruslan Ponomariov (2751), Ukraine - 3
