We are in the first round of the Bundesliga season 2013/2014. Our opponent Emsdetten came out with an almost full line-up, so we did not expect to have an easy match, but we won it with an amazing 6.51.5. The first one to bring us in the lead was Etienne, who really completely outplayed his younger opponent from an about equal position and managed to finish the game with a bang!

Hou Yifan won her games against both Anna Ushenina and Alexandra Kosteniuk

Monte-Carlo keeps crushing all their opponents. SHSM-Nashe Nasledie managed to score 1.5 points though. Ugra defeated Mika 3-1. In round 5 the match between Ugra and SHSM-Nashe Nasledie will strongly affect the final standings.

Ugra was demolished by Monte-Carlo in a dramatic fashion: 4-0. One for all, all for one! The other rating favorites have also won their matches.

In this special weekly column we will be looking at the most unexpected upsets that happened last week. Players usually face opponents of a similar level. Considerably less frequent are situations when a significantly lower-rated player succeeds in beating a much stronger adversary.

In the women's tournament serious action has begun already, while in the Open event only Round 3 will finally bring the first real clashes.

The defending European Club Cup Champion Monte Carlo and the Russian Champion Ugra were the only teams to win the first two matches. A showdown between them will take place as early as in Round 3.

"From Russia With Love" features a brilliant chess combination

I saw the documentary film "Senna" the other day, and it's just as brilliant as its reputation.

Ayrton Senna was a Brazilian racing driver who died tragically young in 1994 in a terrible formula one accident. Tragic were it not for the fact he packed more into his 30 odd years than most people would do if they were given 100 lifetimes.

What stood out for me in this haunting documentary was Senna's love of the pure experience of combat, without the need for any extras. What restricted and frustrated him was that motor racing didn't always come down to who was the better driver- it was often more about who had the better technology, who had the better car. He wanted badly to prove that he was the best driver, if you stripped away everything else.

In the first round of the European Chess Club Cup most of the rating favorites won their matches convincingly in both the women's and the open sections.

Anna Ushenina's and Natalia Pogonina's opponents haven't arrived in Greece in time for the round. The closest game to being named "upset of the round" was Gueci (2054) - Bulmaga (2401), which ended in a draw after White failed to convert two extra pawns. On a a similar note, 2nd seed SHSM-Nashe Nasledie was on the verge of losing to Jelica PEP (#7).

Identity Parade

http://www.pogonina.com/images//10121758.jpg

Down at Copham and Shopham police station, Shifty Sid, Doubtful Des and Creepy Chris were taking part in an identity parade. Three witnesses came in one at a time and selected who they thought they had seen mugging the priest. The first said "Shifty Sid did it". The second said "Either Shifty Sid or Creepy Chris was the mugger". The third said "Neither Shifty Sid nor Doubtful Des did it". PC Neesbend knew that at least one of the witnesses had been bribed by the culprit and was lying. Fortunately, the officer knew how many were lying and managed to uniquely determine who the villain was.

Who mugged the priest?
