The strong European Cup Club Championship finished with an upset victory by 5th seed G-Team Novy Bor (rating average only 2667 FIDE) ahead of favorites Malachite (average 2729) and SOCAR (average 2753). One of the big heroes of the winning team was GM Viktor Laznicka (2666) who in the 3-3 draw vs. Malachite beat Morozevich (2734) and in the penultimate round 3½-2½ upset against SOCAR defeated Kamsky (2725).

Unless you've been hiding under a rock for the past twenty years or so, you wouldn't have failed to miss the huge influence that computers now hold over modern chess.

The explosion of popularity of chess programs like Rybka, Houdini and so on all really started with the very famous match of 1997, when the IBM-driven monster, Deep Blue, defeated the last bastion of mankind Garry Kasparov, in a tumultuous match.

Monte-Carlo cruised through the tournament and won it with a round to go

One thing is certain in the women's tournament: Monte-Carlo repeated last year's success and won gold.
Ugra is 2 MPs ahead of the nearest three rivals - SHM-Nashe Nasledie, CS Politechnica-Anabiotice Iasi and Mika Chess Club. However, according to the allegedly manually done pairings, only SHSM-Nashe Nasledie is basically guaranteed a medal due to facing the rating outsider (#11) of the tournament in the final round, while the other three teams in contention for the medals will be having really challenging match-ups...
