From the recently finished Barcelona Magistral tournament.  Position after 28 moves.  White has a menacing position on the Kingside and for this reason Alsina decided to offer the exchange on e6.  Alsinas idea is that if now 29.BxR PxB he might soon get some threats along the long diagonal with d4 and Qc6.  Atleast White would have to scale back his offensive and Black would still be kicking

HOWEVER, the tournament winner was not willing to surrender the initiative!  He chose another line of attackdo you see it?

Carlsen - Anand, Game 1 Drawn

In game 1 Magnus Carlsen had White. He opened up with 1.Nf3, but it clearly didn't catch Viswanathan Anand off guard. The World Chess Champion equalized easily and drew the game on move 16.

During the press conference both players acted like nothing special has happened, but the outcome of the game is clearly a small moral victory for Anand, because, according to the opinion of most experts, Carlsen will by trying to exhaust Anand by playing long and "boring" games, hoping to capitalize on the Norwegian's legendary endgame skills.

We will see a very interesting game with a lot of strange motives. It is clear that both players were not scared of going for a real fight. In a very complex position, Svidler suddenly started panicking and made a horrible miscalculation, putting all his resources into the attack on the black king and quickly got punished by very cool play of Nakamura.

Magnus vs Vishy- when you play the game of thrones, you win or you die

Near Chennai this week, India fired its rocket into space. However in the same city, it will be dealing with a mercurial object of an entirely difficult nature, which will occupy the India consciousness over the next few weeks.

Put more simply, how can their reigning champion, Viswanathan Anand, prevent the inexorable rise of the young superstar, Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, to the World chess crown? It seems like an impossible task.

The portents for Vishy are not good. Never in recent memory has a reigning chess champ gone into a title defence, starting as such an underdog. In fact I believe you have to go back to 1972, when Bobby Fischer wrested the crown from the Russian Boris Spassky, to a time when the challenger started the match as such an overwhelming favourite.
