Gawain Jones and Vishy Anand- set to face off again.

Sadly I won't be playing in the London classic this year, the open that is. That's because I made a couple of big mistakes, the first of which was to turn down the £500 they offered me to play in the open (all the grandmasters in the open get the same I believe. Well maybe if you're 2600 plus it might be slightly different..)

And the second was to book my accommodation for Hastings in advance, thus depriving me of funds to play in London.

Still the upside of this is that I'll just be able to put my feet up, crack open a beer and watch what should be a very exciting rapidplay event. The London classic is of course the brainchild of Malcolm Pein, and knowing Malcolm personally I can say he's a thoroughly nice guy, and deserves to have a successful event.

In this special weekly column we will be looking at the most unexpected upsets that happened last week. Players usually face opponents of a similar level. Considerably less frequent are situations when a significantly lower-rated player succeeds in beating a much stronger adversary.

GM Nakamura - GM Kramnik annotated by GM Naiditsch

We know that these two players don't like each other too much and recently Nakamura showed great personal results against Kramnik. In the current game it seems like Kramnik manages to almost equalize but not completely and this is where Nakamura is taking over with great positional play and a very pretty final calculation. We will see a great game by the American Number 1.

Losing Your Motivation

Victor Korchnoi- matured with age, but for most it's a different experience.

Why do chessplayers get weaker? There are a number of explanations for why chessplayers decline with age, but one of the primary reasons is a loss of motivation. In fact I'd say that was the main reason why most grandmasters tend to have a good career for 15-20 years or so, but then fade away to almost nothing. They lose their mojo.

Take Vishy Anand as an example. Ok I've picked on Vishy more than enough over the last few weeks in this blog, so I have no wish to do so again, but it's clear he's lost motivation.

Compare him to Boris Gelfand. Historically Vishy has been regarded as the stronger of the two. But now is that the case? Boris seems highly motivated over the last few years, to prove himself, but it's easy to see that by comparison, Vishy has lost something. Desire. If they played a match now, my money would be on Boris.

And it's not so difficult to understand why that might be. Vishy has achieved everything that can be done in chess. He's been world champion, he's won many tournaments. What more is there to prove?

Valentina Gunina (left) and Elisabeth Paehtz during the 1st game of the final

On Thursday, November 28th, 2013, a women's rapid chess tournament was organized by the newspaper "Neues Deutschland" in Berlin. The participants were 4 top players from Russia, Norway and Germany: GM Valentina Gunina (Russia) who had to defend her title from the same event last year, WGM Elisabeth Paehtz (Germany) who had been second in 2012, WGM Marta Michna (Germany) and WIM Silje Bjerke (Norway). In a first stage they had two play against each other with 10 minutes per game plus increment. Valentina Gunina won all three games and came out clear first ahead of Elisabeth Paehtz (2.0) and Marta Michna (1.0).

This meant that Valentina and Elisabeth had to play the final and Marta and Silje had to play for 3rd place. In this second stage two games were played with 15 minutes per game plus increment.
