Black to move

a) Attacking tactic. In the position on the diagram Black played ...Rf6. How does White win?
b) Defensive resources. Are there any better ideas for Black than this highly unfortunate Rf6 move?

Imagine: Chess can be a Win-Win Game

As the Editor-in-Chief of Pogonina.com, I am acquainted with most of the people who run the leading international chess sites. What strikes me so odd in many of them is superfluous competitiveness and undisguised hostility towards their colleagues. Without giving you the names, here are a few telling phrases that I have heard from the managers of some of the top chess portals:

-          They will never quote our articles, because our news posts are much better than theirs.

-          You wouldnt tolerate someone posting links to a different chess site at Pogonina.com, right?.

-          We are working on our own products, so we wont be publishing anything that promotes competing services.

-          There is no need for the readers to know about other chess projects. Our own site is good enough.

I guess it has much to do with the essence of the game of chess itself. The pie is fixed; there is just one point per match. Either you get it, or your opponent, or its a draw and you split the prize. Hence, many chess entrepreneurs carry over this paradigm into business: they believe that if a person purchases someone elses product, then they wont buy theirs. As a result, they start treating their colleagues with ill-will and trying to harass them in any possible way to make sure they dont get away with a share of the pie.

Anand drew wise conclusions from the match.

An interesting interview with Vishy Anand, about his reaction to losing his world championship crown to Magnus Carlsen, can be found here.

I think one of the things that stands out in the match is Carlsen's mature psychological approach to it. He didn't try to change anything, he simply went in with this attitude that I've been dominating by this approach where I don't concentrate on the opening, where my main strengths are displayed in the middlegame and endgame, and that worked very well in the match as well.

The majority of people, when confronted by a wholly new situation, will try to change something. It shows fantastic self-belief that Carlsen did not fall into that trap. I think Anand expected that Carlsen would come very well-prepared in the main-lines; that he would try to take on Anand in the opening phase, but that just didn't happen.

Snowdrops defeat Oldhands: 17.5-14.5

Tuesday, 10 December 2013

The 6th edition of the Snowdrops vs. Oldhands event was held in Podebrady, Czech Republic, from November 30 to December 8. The traditional format is a double round robin with two teams participating: Oldhands (4 male veteran GMs) and Snowdrops (4 attractive WGMs). It looks as if the organizers are very proficient at maintaining a gender balance: as of today the historical score between the men's and women's teams is tied at 3-3.

This year the Snowdrops team was quite strong, and even a desperate catching-up attempt by the Oldhands in the last few rounds didn't help the chess legends save the match. The final score is 17.5-14.5 in Snowdrops' favor.

CORNERED!

GM
  Kryvoruchko, Yuriy

GM  Nepomniachtchi, Ian

From Round 8 at the World Team Championships in Turkey.  Position after Whites 40th move (40.Kg2)  Black must make his move to reach time control.  There is no doubt that Black is suffering, but White still does not have a knock-out blow and so all is not lost.  Queen and double-Rook endings are notoriously difficult to play, both for the defender and attacker.  Here Black should content himself to play a waiting game, something like retreating the Queen to e7, patiently biding his time.  Let White worry about exploiting his small but clear positional edge

Nepomniachtchi  playing against Kryvoruchko , still in the opening phase of the Russia vs Ukraine match.  Russia won this match, overtaking the Ukraine, Nepos victory being key.

In Wildwood Grubs prison, there were four cells numbered 1-4 from left to right, with only one prisoner to a cell. The following facts had been recorded in the prison officers logbook.

     (1) Cell 2 was occupied by either Angry Alan or Desperate Dave.

     (2) The burglar was next to the poisoner but not next to the strangler.

     (3) Neither Brutal Bill nor Desperate Dave was the knifeman.

     (4) Either the strangler or the knifeman was in cell 4.

     (5) Brutal Bill was next to Cruel Colin.

     (6) Desperate Dave was immediately to the left of the strangler.

Can you find the inmate and crime for each cell?

Shirov beats Dubov 5-1 in a Friendly Match

Daniil Dubov (17) vs. Alexei Shirov (41) - battle of the generations

The friendly match between Latvian Super GM Alexei Shirov (2685) and Russian rising star Daniil Dubov (2629) took place in Moscow from December 2 to 8. The event featured 6 games with the official FIDE time control. In case of a draw in one of the rounds the participants also had to play two blitz games. The event was sponsored by a well-known chess patron Oleg Skvortsov and was covered live by Chess TV, namely, Daniil Dubov's coach GM Sergey Shipov.

The rating gap between the GMs is far from enormous, which can't be said about the difference in match experience and in the final score. Alexei Shirov has won the competition with two rounds to go and has eventually spared only two draws to the chess prodigy (5-1). However, Daniil has had the opportunity to face a real chess legend in a match and to beat him in blitz (3-1), so there is no reason to be upset.

The last month of the calendar has started with... the Rapid, Blitz and Solving Women National Championship, which took place in Iasi. I took all the collection of medals: a gold, a silver and a bronze ( 1st at solving, 2nd at rapid and 3rd at blitz).

It was a really nice weekend, which I spent playing chess and hanging out with friends in the meantime.
