Chess Olympiads are a fantastic experience for all the players in terms of visiting new places, meeting interesting people, having fun at the Bermuda Party. At the same time, this is a very serious competition that grasps the attention of all the chess fans. In this article I would like to share with you my personal opinion on who has the best chances to win the Olympiad. Feel free to argue with my prognosis and offer your own forecasts:

Who will become the next Women's World Chess Champion?

It's easy to get lost in FIDE's championship cycles, so here's a reminder. The current Women's World Champion is Hou Yifan from China. If she wins the next WC, she keeps the title. If not, we will have a new champion, but Hou Yifan will challenge her next year for the title (because Hou won the Grand Prix this year). The Women's World Chess Championship will be a knock-out event held in Khanty-Mansyisk, Russia from November 9th to December 3rd.

Dmitry Andreikin is the Russian Chess Champion

Six players were tied for first with a modest +1 result after the 9 classical rounds of the Russian Chess Superfinal. Who prevailed in the rapid tie-break next day? World Rapid Chess Champion Sergey Karjakin? 6-time Russian Chess Champion Peter Svidler? No. The winner is Dmitry Andreikin, a rising Russian chess star who used to be the World Junior Champion in 2010 and won the Russian Top League quite convincingly this year. Known worldwide as a formidable online blitz player, now he is becoming a force to reckon with in classical chess.
Dmitry rarely gets in the limelight due to having powerful competitors born in 1990: Carlsen (2837), Karjakin (2785) and Nepomniatchi (2704). Meanwhile, Andreikin's live rating is 2718, which makes him #27 in the world and one of the most promising young players.
So far it seems that after getting married Dmitry became much more pragmatic and serious about chess improvement and his life prospects in general. We wish GM Andreikin the best of luck!

Ukraine is rated #2 on the FIDE list of top chess countries with an average rating of top-10 players = 2700. The reigning Olympic champions are a major force to reckon with, hence it is quite interesting to follow their national championship.
Out of the country's leading players only Vassily Ivanchuk (2769, #1) and Yuriy Krivoruchko (2686, #8) didn't participate. While the average chess fan might have expected one of the heavy-weights to win (Ponomariov, Volokitin, Moiseenko, Eljanov), the outcome was different. Anton Korobov, a brilliant young attacking player prevailed in the championship and won his second title (the first victory came in 2002). He is one of those players who don't get enough media coverage due to staying somewhat in the shade of their higher-rated compatriots. Meanwhile, Anton is a very strong grandmaster who, among other achievements, won silver at Aeroflot Open (A) twice in his career. That says a lot already. Congratulations!
