David vs. Goliath: Upsets of the Week

By candidate master Peter Zhdanov, editor of Pogonina.com
In this special weekly column we will be looking at the most unexpected upsets that happened last week. Players usually face opponents of a comparable level. Considerably less frequent are situations when a significantly lower-rated player succeeds in beating a much stronger adversary.
The previous week was rather special. Normally we have a short list of about 20 games with rating differences above 300 points, among which the top-10 are chosen. We decided not to lower our standards. Only 8 games have been found though:
Malakhatko (2571) - Peczely (2072), 0-1, 499 points
Tan (2269) - Tsagarakis (1853), 0-1, 416 points
Chiang (2030) - Aleskerov (2409), 1-0, 379 points
Aksoy (1707) - Hadzi Manev (2071), 1-0, 364 points
Stosevski (2136) - Gjeorgjievski (1779), 0-1, 357 points
Krstevski (2154) - Pencheva (1803), 0-1, 351 points
Tairi (1835) - Ozkan (2184), 1-0, 349 points
Aksoy (1791) - Stojanovski (2125), 1-0, 334 points
Average gap: 381; White won 4 games, Black won 4 games

If you have ever won a game against someone rated 300 points or above of yourself, please send it to us for publication. Any additional information (a photo, annotations, etc.) will be appreciated.

Women's World Team Chess Championship-2013, Round 8

All the main four favorites won their Round 8 matches. Now Ukraine needs a victory or a tie against Russia in the last round to secure gold. China gets gold only if Ukraine loses to Russia and China beats India. Russia needs to beat Ukraine and China not to win against India to get the silver medal, otherwise they will most likely end up with bronze. Georgia's chances for bronze are ephemeral given the difference in match and board points between Russia and Georgia.
