In this special weekly column we will be looking at the most unexpected upsets that happened last week. Players usually face opponents of a similar level. Considerably less frequent are situations when a significantly lower-rated player succeeds in beating a much stronger adversary.

21 games total, including an upset with a rating difference of over 600 points - this is a holiday for David vs. Goliath fans! A special mention goes to 70-year old veteran Timo Parrasmaa (2070) from Finland, who crushed such legends as Anatoly Karpov (2619) and Robert Huebner (2595) in a rapid tournament with a time handicap offered to the lower-rated participants. Make sure to replay those bold attacking games.

Peev (1706) - Zivkovic (2334), 1-0, 628 points
Porrasmaa (2070) - Karpov (2619), 1-0, 549 points
Nguyen Than Thinh (1958) - Cao (2499), 1-0, 541 points

Porrasmaa (2070) - Huebner (2595), 1-0, 525 points
Jovanovic (2428) - Pavlovic (1919), 0-1, 509 points
Kahn (1992) - Ziska (2484), 1-0, 492 points
Kourousis (2364) - Bechynsky (1879), 0-1, 485 points
Antonic (1950) - Blesic (2383), 1-0, 433 points
Haavamae (2023) - Sepp (2440), 1-0, 417 points
Vlk (2006) - Nemcova (1605), 0-1, 401 points

Average gap: 498; White won 7 games, Black won 3 games
