GM  Bondarevsky, Igor

1

IM Sliwa, Bogdan

Hastings, 1961.  Position after Whites 15th move (15.Qa3).  The Black Bishop is attacked.  White was counting on grabbing some material against the Russian grandmaster, but a very unpleasant suprise is in store instead

BLACK TO PLAY AND WIN!

IM  Ujtelky, Max

2

GM Bondarevsky, Igor

Rostov on Don ;1961.  Position after 27 moves of play.  The game reminds me a lot of  the game Botvinnik versus Capablanca, 1938.  Black is about to be punished for weakening his Kings fortress.  Strong is 28.Nf5+ followed by Qe5, but Bondarevsky was an artist and demanded perfection.

WHITE TO PLAY AND WIN!

-

GM Bondarevsky, Igor

3

GM Ragozin,V

Moscow, 1946.  Position after 27 moves of play.  Black is busted, his King position completely gutted and hanging on by a thread.  Now all one needs is to finish him off

WHITE TO PLAY AND MATE IN 8!

GM  Botvinnik,M

4

GM  Bondarevsky, Igor

USSR Championship 1941.  Moscow/Leningrad.  Position after Whites 28th move.   Botvinnik has his opponent on the run and is not just a pawn to the good but has a wicked initiative as well.

BLACK TO PLAY AND WIN!

-

GM  Bondarevsky,Igor

5a

IM  Panov,V

Tbilisi, 1947. USSR Ch.  Position after Whites 17th move (17.Ne2)  White wants to change the guard on d4 with his other Knight, but this proves to be dangerous.  Now Bondarevsky has an opportunity to strike first:

17Bxh3!!

5b

If now 18.PxB Black wins with 18Bxf2+!!  19.Kg2 (what else?  19.KxR allows 19Qh2+ 20.Kf1  Re3!! with a forced mate)  19Rxe2!! and there is no saving the White King.

White tried to be pragmatic and limit his loss to a Pawn:

18.Bf4!?

5c

Now in the game continuation Bondarevsky backed off with 18Qd7 when 19.Bxc4 gives White reasonable chances to save a bad game.  HOWEVER, in the above position, Bondarevsky could have played more decisively!

BLACK TO PLAY AND CRUSH WHITE!

SOLUTIONS

Hastings 1961  Sliwa, Bogdan Bondarevsky, Igor:  15 cxd4!! 16.Rxc8 Rxc8 17.b4 Qxb4! 0-1

Rostov on Don 1961.  Bondarevsky, Igor Ujtelky, Max:  28.Rxf6 Kxf6  (28QxR  29.Nh5+) 29.Qe5+ Ke7 30.Nf5+ 1-0

Moscow 1946. Ragozin VBondarevsky,Igor   28.Qxa7+! Elegant! 28 Kxa7 29.Rxb7+ Ka8 30.d6 1-0

Moscow/Leningrad.1941. Ussr Ch. Bondarevsky ,Igor Botvinnik ,M:  28Rxh3+ 0-1  Taking the Rook allows a quick kill after Ndf4.

Tbilisi 1937. Ussr Ch.  Panov Vasily Bondarevsky Igor:  17Rxe2! 18.Rxe2 (Taking the Queen allows 18Bxf2+ and 19RxR) 18 Qxf4 19.gxh3 Qg3+ etc.
